Frequently Asked Questions
-
The AAPI Caregiver Support Group is a culturally-attuned therapeutic support group for Asian American and Pacific Islander adults who are caring for aging parents, family members, or loved ones. Led by Caitlin Blair, LCSW, of Tiny Cottage Therapy this group provides a safe space to address caregiver burnout, compassion fatigue, intergenerational stress, and the unique challenges AAPI caregivers face when balancing cultural expectations with their own wellbeing.
-
This group is for Asian American and Pacific Islander adults (18+) who are currently in caregiving roles or experiencing caregiver burnout. You might be caring for aging parents, managing family responsibilities across generations, navigating cultural expectations around filial piety, or feeling emotionally exhausted from putting others' needs first. This group is also for mixed-race individuals with AAPI heritage who resonate with these experiences.
-
The group addresses caregiver burnout and compassion fatigue, guilt and obligation in caregiving roles, setting boundaries with family while honoring cultural values, managing intergenerational and cultural stress, navigating family dynamics and communication challenges, self-care without guilt, grief and anticipatory loss, and the emotional toll of being the "family translator" or cultural bridge. Each session is tailored to the group's needs and current challenges.
-
No, you do not need to be in individual therapy to join the AAPI Caregiver Support Group. The group is open to anyone who identifies as an AAPI caregiver and is seeking community support. However, the group is therapeutic in nature and led by a licensed therapist, so it can complement individual therapy if you're already working with a therapist.
-
No. While many participants are caring for aging parents, this group is for anyone in a caregiving role within their family or community. This includes caring for children with special needs, supporting family members with chronic illness or disability, managing household and family responsibilities, or serving as the emotional support person for your family. If you identify as a caregiver and feel the weight of that role, you belong here.
-
This group is specifically designed with cultural awareness of AAPI family dynamics, intergenerational expectations, and mental health stigma. Caitlin Blair specializes in working with AAPI and multicultural clients and understands the unique pressures around filial piety, "saving face," collectivist values, and the expectation to sacrifice personal needs for family harmony. You won't have to explain your cultural context or family dynamics—they're already understood and honored in this space.
-
The group is offered online via secure telehealth platform, making it accessible to AAPI caregivers throughout California and Washington. Virtual groups allow for greater flexibility and reduce barriers like childcare, transportation, and time constraints that often prevent caregivers from accessing support.
-
Group therapy coverage varies by insurance plan. Tiny Cottage Therapy can provide a superbill (receipt) that you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement, but the group is not directly billed through insurance.
